The Bible and Science & Health With Key to the ScripturesBy Mary Baker Eddy
GENESIS
1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
31 And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good.
ACTS
17:24 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;
25 Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;
28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being;
SCIENCE AND HEALTH
SH 502:22-27
Genesis i. 1. In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
The infinite has no beginning. This word beginning is employed to signify the only, — that is, the eternal verity and unity of God and man, including the universe.
SH 336:25-26
God, the divine Principle of man, and man in God’s likeness are inseparable, harmonious, and eternal.
SH 336:28-30
God and man are not the same, but in the order of divine Science, God and man coexist and are eternal.
SH 361:16
As a drop of water is one with the ocean, a ray of light one with the sun, even so God and man, Father and son, are one in being. The Scripture reads: “For in Him we live, and move, and have our being.”
SH 202:3
The scientific unity which exists between God and man must be wrought out in life-practice, and God’s will must be universally done.
SH 282:11
Eternal Mind and temporary material existence never unite in figure or in fact.
JOHN
10:23 . . . Jesus walked in the temple in Solomon’s porch.
24 Then came the Jews round about him, and said unto him, How long dost thou make us to doubt? If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly.
35 Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believed not: the works that I do in my Father’s name, they bear witness of me.
30 I and my Father are one.
38 … though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in him.
14:6 … I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
10 … the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.
12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.
FIRST CORINTHIANS
8:6 … there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.
SCIENCE AND HEALTH
SH 476:4
In divine Science, God and the real man are inseparable as divine Principle and idea.
SH 465:17-1 Principal
Principle and its idea is one, and this one is God, omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent Being, and His reflection is man and the universe.
SH 306:13-19
If Life or Soul and its representative, man, unite for a period and then are separated as by a law of divorce to be brought together again at some uncertain future time and in a manner unknown, — and this is the general religious opinion of mankind, — we are left without a rational proof of immortality. But man cannot be separated for an instant from God, if man reflects God.
SH 361:12-16 Jesus
Jesus Christ is not God, as Jesus himself declared, but is the Son of God. This declaration of Jesus, understood, conflicts not at all with another of his sayings: “I and my Father are one,” — that is, one in quality, not in quantity
SH 279:27 there
. . . there are not two bases of being, matter and mind, but one alone, —Mind.
From EPHESIANS in the New Living Translation
4:1 I, a prisoner for serving the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of your calling, for you have been called by God.
3 Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace.
4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;
6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.
14 Then we will no longer be immature like children. We won’t be tossed and blown about by every wind of new teaching. We will not be influenced when people try to trick us with lies so clever they sound like the truth.
23 … let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes.
32 … be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.
JOSHUA
1:9 . . . Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.
SCIENCE AND HEALTH
SH 92:26
The foundation of evil is laid on a belief in something besides God. This belief tends to support two opposite powers, instead of urging the claims of Truth alone. The mistake of thinking that error can be real, when it is merely the absence of truth, leads to belief in the superiority of error.
SH 477:9-13 To
To the five corporeal senses, man appears to be matter and mind united; but Christian Science reveals man as the idea of God, and declares the corporeal senses to be mortal and erring illusions.
SH 167:20-26 (2nd The), 30
The flesh and Spirit can no more unite in action, than good can coincide with evil. It is not wise to take a halting and half-way position or to expect to work equally with Spirit and matter, Truth and error. There is but one way — namely, God and His idea — which leads to spiritual being.
Only through radical reliance on Truth can scientific healing power be realized.
JOHN
17: 1 These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee:
3 … this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
6 I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word.
11 … Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.
16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;
21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.
22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:
23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.
SCIENCE AND HEALTH
SH 333:26-30
The divine image, idea, or Christ was, is, and ever will be inseparable from the divine Principle, God. Jesus referred to this unity of his spiritual identity thus: “Before Abraham was, I am;” “I and my Father are one;” “My Father is greater than I.”
SH 333:32
By these sayings Jesus meant, not that the human Jesus was or is eternal, but that the divine idea or Christ was and is so and therefore antedated Abraham; not that the corporeal Jesus was one with the Father, but that the spiritual idea, Christ, dwells forever in the bosom of the Father, God, from which it illumines heaven and earth; not that the Father is greater than Spirit, which is God, but greater, infinitely greater, than the fleshly Jesus, whose earthly career was brief.
SH 340:23
One infinite God, good, unifies men and nations; constitutes the brotherhood of man; ends wars; fulfils the Scripture, “Love thy neighbor as thyself;” annihilates pagan and Christian idolatry, — whatever is wrong in social, civil, criminal, political, and religious codes; equalizes the sexes; annuls the curse on man, and leaves nothing that can sin, suffer, be punished or destroyed.
SH 506:10-11
Through divine Science, Spirit, God, unites understanding to eternal harmony.
SH 205:29
Denial of the oneness of Mind throws our weight into the scale, not of Spirit, God, good, but of matter.
SH 282:20-21
At no point can these opposites mingle or unite.
SH 18:3-5
Jesus of Nazareth taught and demonstrated man’s oneness with the Father, and for this we owe him endless homage.
DEUTERONOMY
7:6 … thou art an holy people unto the Lord thy God: the Lord thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people unto himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth.
7 The Lord did not set his love upon you, nor choose you, because ye were more in number than any people; for ye were the fewest of all people:
8 But because the Lord loved you, …
ACTS
2:1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
38 . . . Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.
41 ¶ Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.
42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.
43. . .and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles.
SCIENCE AND HEALTH
SH 42:19-20
The belief that man has existence or mind separate from God is a dying error.
SH 469:30-5
With one Father, even God, the whole family of man would be brethren; and with one Mind and that God, or good, the brotherhood of man would consist of Love and Truth, and have unity of Principle and spiritual power which constitute divine Science.
SH 14:25-28
Entirely separate from the belief and dream of material living, is the Life divine, revealing spiritual understanding and the consciousness of man’s dominion over the whole earth.
PUBLICATIONS EXCERPTS
First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany
By Mary Baker Eddy
Pages 344:3-7, 160:5
“If we say that the sun stands for God, then all his rays collectively stand for Christ, and each separate ray for men and women. God the Father is greater than Christ, but Christ is ‘one with the Father,’ and so the mystery is scientifically explained.
“To live so as to keep human consciousness in constant relation with the divine, the spiritual, and the eternal, is to individualize infinite power; and this is Christian Science.”
“Uniity Through Oneness”
By Freda Sperling Benson
The Christian Science Journal, March 1952
Unity with our neighbors in our community and in the world is for each of us to demonstrate.
The true union, the unity of God and man, which Christian Science reveals, is the basis of the brotherhood of man. God being the one universal Father, His sons and daughters must be one family, unified by Love.
Just as humans try to heal a sick body by changing something in the matter dream, so they would try to heal the body politic by changing the social structure.
Great was the disappointment of the oppressed people in Jesus’ day because he did not establish a worldly kingdom. But he knew that unity is not, and never can be, founded upon a group of mortal minds agreeing on something. He proved man’s oneness with God as Mind’s idea.
What appears as division and conflict in the world today is merely the supposition of error. We know that since these appearances are not good, they have no God; and having no God, they have no Life and no activity; having no Mind, they have no influence; having no Principle, they have no basis. The claim of a kingdom divided against itself cannot stand. So every thought, word, or act that would divide is self-destructive and is bringing about its own extermination.
As we steadfastly maintain that every expression of Life is Principle’s reflection and is obedient to divine Love, we shall see this manifested humanly in harmony. History will not continue to be a pendulum swinging between the rebellion of the masses and the domination of the classes, but will disclose the right idea of man, individually and collectively controlled by God.
