THE HOLY GHOST

 THE BIBLE

PSALMS

51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.

11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.

12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.

119:34 Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart.

PROVERBS

2:1 My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee;

2 So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding;

3 Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding;

5 Then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God.

MARK

1:4 John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.

7 And preached, saying, There cometh one mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose.

8 I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.

JOHN

14:8 Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us.

9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip?

10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.

12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.

13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;

17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

26 … the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

16:7 … It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

12 I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.

13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

ACTS

1:1 The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach,

2 Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen:

4 And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.

5 For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.

8 … ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

MATTHEW

28:16 Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them.

17 And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted.

18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

19 ¶Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.

I CORINTHIANS

6:19 know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

2:12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.

13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

I JOHN

5:7 … there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.

13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

20 And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.

ROMANS

15:13 Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.

SCIENCE & HEALTH WITH KEY TO THE SCRIPTURES

BY MARY BAKER EDDY

SH 588:7

HOLY GHOST. Divine Science; the development of eternal Life, Truth, and Love.

SH 497:3-8

1. As adherents of Truth, we take the inspired Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal Life.

2. We acknowledge and adore one supreme and infinite God. We acknowledge His Son, one Christ; the Holy Ghost or divine Comforter; and man in God’s image and likeness.

SH 332:19

Jesus demonstrated Christ; he proved that Christ is the divine idea of God — the Holy Ghost, or Comforter, revealing the divine Principle, Love, and leading into all truth.

SH 331:26

Life, Truth, and Love constitute the triune Person called God, — that is, the triply divine Principle, Love.  They represent a trinity in unity, three in one, — the same in essence, though multi‐form in office: God the Father-Mother; Christ the spiritual idea of sonship; divine Science or the Holy Comforter.  These three express in divine Science the threefold, essential nature of the infinite. They also indicate the divine Principle of scientific being, the intelligent relation of God to man and the universe.

SH 123:16-27

The term CHRISTIAN SCIENCE was introduced by the author to designate the scientific system of divine healing.

The revelation consists of two parts:

1. The discovery of this divine Science of Mind-healing, through a spiritual sense of the Scriptures and through the teachings of the Comforter, as promised by
the Master.

2. The proof, by present demonstration, that the so‐called miracles of Jesus did not specially belong to a dispensation now ended, but that they illustrated an ever-operative divine Principle.

SH 496:15 it

… it is the spiritual idea, the Holy Ghost and Christ, which enables you to
demonstrate, with scientific certainty, the rule of healing, based upon its divine Principle, Love, underlying, overlying, and encompassing all true being.

SH 561:32-3

John the Baptist prophesied the coming of the immaculate Jesus, and John saw in those days the spiritual idea as the Messiah, who would baptize with the Holy Ghost, — divine Science.

SH 275:20-23

Divine metaphysics, as revealed to spiritual understanding, shows clearly that all is Mind, and that Mind is God, omnipotence, omnipresence, omniscience, — that is, all power, all presence, all Science.

SH 275:26 (only)

The true understanding of God is spiritual.

SH 96:23-24

Belief is changeable, but spiritual understanding is changeless.

SH 505:22-28

Spiritual understanding unfolds Mind, — Life, Truth, and Love, — and demonstrates the divine sense, giving the spiritual proof of the universe in Christian Science.

This understanding is not intellectual, is not the result of scholarly attainments; it is the reality of all things brought to light.

SH 506:5

Understanding is a quality of God, a quality which separates Christian Science from supposition and makes Truth final.

SH 43:3

The magnitude of Jesus’ work, his material disappearance before their eyes and his reappearance, all enabled the disciples to understand what Jesus had said. Heretofore they had only believed; now they understood. The advent of this understanding is what is meant by the descent of the Holy Ghost, — that influx of divine Science which so illuminated the Pentecostal Day and is now repeating its ancient history.

SH 46:26-9

In his final demonstration, called the ascension, which closed the earthly record of Jesus, he rose above the physical knowledge of his disciples, and the material senses saw him no more.

His students then received the Holy Ghost. By this is meant, that by all they had witnessed and suffered, they were roused to an enlarged understanding of divine Science, even to the spiritual interpretation and discernment of Jesus’ teachings and demonstrations, which gave them a faint conception of the Life which is God.
They no longer measured man by material sense. After gaining the true idea of their glorified Master, they became better healers, leaning no longer on matter,
but on the divine Principle of their work. The influx of light was sudden. It was sometimes an overwhelming power as on the Day of Pentecost.

SH 496:15

Hold perpetually this thought, — that it is the spiritual idea, the Holy Ghost and Christ, which enables you to demonstrate, with scientific certainty, the rule of healing, based upon its divine Principle, Love, underlying, overlying, and encompassing all true being.

SH 127:26

Science is an emanation of divine Mind, and is alone able to interpret God aright.
It has a spiritual, and not a material origin. It is a divine utterance, — the Comforter which leadeth into all truth.

SH 55:27

In the words of St. John: “He shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever.” This Comforter I understand to be Divine Science.

“The second tenet of the Christian Science church reads…“

By Gray Montgomery

Christian Science Sentinel

August 21, 1909

“The second tenet of the Christian Science church reads: ‘We acknowledge and adore one supreme and infinite God. We acknowledge His Son, one Christ; the Holy Ghost or divine Comforter; and man in God’s image and likeness’ (Science and Health, p. 497). The Holy Ghost is the understanding of Truth, the same unfoldment of Life, Truth, and Love that enabled the prophets of old to write the Scriptures.

“The Bible informs us that the conception of Jesus was of the Holy Ghost. Mary’s understanding of God as the only Father enabled her to give to the world its long-expected Saviour. The Bible also tells us that ‘Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied;’ that ‘Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost,’ taught Christianity to the ‘elders of Israel;’ that ‘Saul, filled with the Holy Ghost,’ rebuked Elymas the sorcerer. Jesus, filled with the Holy Ghost, that is, possessing the perfect understanding of God, reformed the sinner, and healed the helpless invalid by awakening him from the dream of life in matter to the fact of his real life in God, thus changing his thoughts from fear to a realization of God’s protecting love and power. By restoring the dead to life, and by his own resurrection, he proved that the understanding of Truth, the Holy Ghost, can overcome even the last enemy. And today Christian Scientists, accepting all of the Bible teaching, are again performing, in a measure, similar reformative, regenerative, and healing works.

“Jesus was the highest human concept of the Christ, and when the human element disappeared from mortal sight his real spiritual entity, the Christ-man in the image and likeness of God, dawned upon the consciousness of his followers; and as Mrs. Eddy teaches (Science and Health, p. 31), ‘it is the living Christ, the practical Truth, which makes Jesus “the resurrection and the life” to all who follow him in deed.’”
