FROM THE BIBLE
AND
SCIENCE & HEALTH WITH KEY TO THE SCRIPTURES
BY MARY BAKER EDDY
PROVERBS
2:1 My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee;
2 So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding;
3 Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding;
5 Then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God.
4:10 Hear, O my son, and receive my sayings; and the years of thy life shall be many.
JOB
22:21 Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee.
22 Receive, I pray thee, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in thine heart.
26 For then shalt thou have thy delight in the Almighty, and shalt lift up thy face unto God.
I SAMUEL
3:4 … the Lord called Samuel:
5 And he ran unto Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou calledst me. And he said, I called not; lie down again. And he went and lay down.
6 And the Lord called yet again, Samuel. And Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And he answered, I called not, my son; lie down again.
8 And the Lord called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And Eli perceived that the Lord had called the child.
9 Therefore Eli said unto Samuel, Go, lie down: and it shall be, if he call thee, that thou shalt say, Speak, Lord; for thy servant heareth.
I KINGS
19:2 … Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah, saying, So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by to-morrow about this time.
3 And when he saw that, he arose, and went for his life, …
9 ¶ And he came thither unto a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and he said unto him, What doest thou here, Elijah?
10 And he said, I have been very jealous for the Lord God of hosts: for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.
11 And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord. And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake:
12 And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.
SH 323:28-2
The effects of Christian Science are not so much seen as felt. It is the “still, small voice” of Truth uttering itself. We are either turning away from this utterance, or we are listening to it and going up higher. Willingness to become as a little child and to leave the old for the new, renders thought receptive of the advanced idea.
SH 107:1
In the year 1866, I discovered the Christ Science or divine laws of Life, Truth, and Love, and named my discovery Christian Science. God had been graciously preparing me during many years for the reception of this final revelation of the absolute divine Principle of scientific mental healing.
SH 108:1-4
Whence came to me this heavenly conviction, — a conviction antagonistic to the testimony of the physical senses? According to St. Paul, it was “the gift of the grace of God given unto me by the effectual working of His power.”
MARK
5:25 And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood twelve years,
26 And had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse,
27 When she had heard of Jesus, came in the press behind, and touched his garment.
28 For she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole.
29 And straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague.
30 And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him, turned him about in the press, and said, Who touched my clothes?
31 And his disciples said unto him, Thou seest the multitude thronging thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me?
32 And he looked round about to see her that had done this thing.
33 But the woman fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth.
34 And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, ….
SH xi:9
The physical healing of Christian Science results now, as in Jesus’ time, from the operation of divine Principle, before which sin and disease lose their reality in human consciousness and disappear as naturally and as necessarily as darkness gives place to light and sin to reformation. Now, as then, these mighty works are not supernatural, but supremely natural. They are the sign of Immanuel, or “God with us,”–a divine influence ever present in human consciousness and repeating itself, coming now as was promised aforetime,
To preach deliverance to the captives [of sense],
And recovering of sight to the blind,
To set at liberty them that are bruised.
JOHN
9:1 … as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth.
6 … he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay,
7 And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing.
8 ¶ The neighbours therefore, and they which before had seen him that he was blind, said, Is not this he that sat and begged?
15 … the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and do see.
16 Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles?
24 Then again called they the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner.
25 He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.
SH 132:14-24
The Pharisees of old thrust the spiritual idea and the man who lived it out of their synagogues, and retained their materialistic beliefs about God. Jesus’ system of healing received no aid nor approval from other sanitary or religious systems, from doctrines of physics or of divinity; and it has not yet been generally accepted. To-day, as of yore, unconscious of the reappearing of the spiritual idea, blind belief shuts the door upon it, and condemns the cure of the sick and sinning if it is wrought on any but a material and a doctrinal theory.
SH 41:22-24, 28-30
Jesus foresaw the reception Christian Science would have before it was understood, but this foreknowledge hindered him not.
The truth taught by Jesus, the elders scoffed at. Why? Because it demanded more than they were willing to practice.
SH 4:30
Whatever materializes worship hinders man’s spiritual growth and keeps him from demonstrating his power over error.
LUKE
24:1 Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them.
3 And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus.
13 ¶ And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs.
15 And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them.
27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.
30 And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them.
31 And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.
32 And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?
SH 46:5
In the walk to Emmaus, Jesus was known to his friends by the words, which made their hearts burn within them, and by the breaking of bread. The divine Spirit, which identified Jesus thus centuries ago, has spoken through the inspired Word and will speak through it in every age and clime. It is revealed to the receptive heart, and is again seen casting out evil and healing the sick.
SH 45:32-4
Jesus’ students, not sufficiently advanced fully to understand their Master’s triumph, did not perform many wonderful works, until they saw him after his crucifixion and learned that he had not died. This convinced them of the truthfulness of all that he had taught.
SH 34:18-23
Through all the disciples experienced, they became more spiritual and understood better what the Master had taught. His resurrection was also their resurrection. It helped them to raise themselves and others from spiritual dulness and blind belief in God into the perception of infinite possibilities.
JOHN
14:15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.
16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
MARK
11:23 … verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.
24 Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.
I JOHN
3:22 …whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.
SH 1:1-4
The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God, — a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love.
SH 323:19-24
When the sick or the sinning awake to realize their need of what they have not, they will be receptive of divine Science, which gravitates towards Soul and away from material sense, removes thought from the body, and elevates even mortal mind to the contemplation of something better than disease or sin.
REVELATION
3:20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
SH vii:13-15 Truth
Truth, independent of doctrines and time-honored systems, knocks at the portal of humanity.
SH 34:10
If all who ever partook of the sacrament had really commemorated the sufferings of Jesus and drunk of his cup, they would have revolutionized the world. If all who seek his commemoration through material symbols will take up the cross, heal the sick, cast out evils, and preach Christ, or Truth, to the poor,–the receptive thought,–they will bring in the millennium.
SH 571:12 listen (to .)
… listen and be wise.

“Receptivity”
By James K. Westover
Christian Science Sentinel
January 26, 1957
… the door of spiritual unfoldment is closed to no one, but is open to all who recognize the divine Mind as the source of all true thought.
In acquiring learning and its subsequent wisdom, the first requisite on the part of the student is receptivity. Receptivity is a state or quality of being able to take in, or hold in thought. Merely having a thought presented to one does not constitute receptivity; that which is received must also be accepted and understood.
The spiritual idea is possessed of true receptivity. Mortal mind also claims to possess receptivity. During every waking hour impressions, suggestions, or instructions come to the individual by press, by radio, by television, or by conversation. They say to him: “Take me in, hold on to me!” We need frequently to examine our thinking, therefore, to determine whether we are taking in and retaining that which is good, that which will meet our needs, or whether we are permitting consciousness to be loaded with that which will restrict, inhibit, or prevent our rightful progress.
Concerning the Christ it is written (John 1:12), “As many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God.” The power of Truth, then, comes to us only when we begin to understand that in reality we are the sons of God, when we take in, understand, and hold fast to the truth that we are spiritual and inseparable from the Father, and are therefore endowed with true power. Conversely, in proportion as we fail to acquire a right sense of receptivity we may be beset by everything which opposes the Christ-idea—all the undermining, contradicting, restricting so-called forces of evil.
Christ Jesus said (Mark 11:24, 25), “What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.” If our receptivity is deep and wide and fully open to accept that which God has provided, we may have complete faith that every right desire will be fulfilled—filled full. Truly, receptivity is a quality that has meaning and value, and without it the Christian Scientist may look in vain for permanent healing results.
