READINGS FROM THE BIBLE
AND
SCIENCE & HEALTH WITH KEY TO THE SCRIPTURES
BY MARY BAKER EDDY
PSALMS
1:1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
II CHRONICLES
20:6 … O Lord God of our fathers, art not thou God in heaven? and rulest not thou over all the kingdoms of the heathen? and in thine hand is there not power and might, so that none is able to withstand thee?
LUKE
4:1 … Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,
5 And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.
6 And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them:
7 If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine.
8 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
SH 115:13
GOD: Divine Principle, Life, Truth, Love, Soul, Spirit, Mind.
SH 112:16-20 (to ;)
From the infinite One in Christian Science comes one Principle and its infinite idea, and with this infinitude come spiritual rules, laws, and their demonstration, which, like the great Giver, are “the same yesterday, and to-day, and forever;”
SH 318:28-29 In (to 2nd ,)
In Science man is governed by God, divine Principle,…
SH 473:7-10
The God-principle is omnipresent and omnipotent. God is everywhere, and nothing apart from Him is present or has power.
SH 283:11 (only)
Principle is absolute.
SH 329:21-22 Principle (to 2nd .)
Principle is imperative. You cannot mock it by human will.
I KINGS
3:5 In Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night: and God said, Ask what I shall give thee.
6 And Solomon said, …
7 … O Lord my God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of David my father: and I am but a little child: I know not how to go out or come in.
9 Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?
11 And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life; neither hast asked riches for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies; but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern judgment;
12 Behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee.
ALSO FROM I KINGS
19:1 And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and withal how he had slain all the prophets with the sword.
2 Then Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah, saying, So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time.
3 And when he saw that, he arose, and went for his life…
9¶ And he came thither unto a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and he said unto him, What doest thou here, Elijah?
10 And he said, I have been very jealous for the Lord God of hosts: for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.
11 And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord. And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake:
12 And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.
SH 128:4-6
The term Science, properly understood, refers only to the laws of God and to His government of the universe, inclusive of man.
SH 323:29-32
It is the “still, small voice” of Truth uttering itself. We are either turning away from this utterance, or we are listening to it and going up higher.
SH 327:23-24
Moral courage is requisite to meet the wrong and to and to proclaim the right.
SH 573:15-17 God
… God, the divine Principle of harmony, is ever with men, and they are His people.
SH 453:16-17
Honesty is spiritual power. Dishonesty is human weakness, which forfeits divine help.
SH viii:3-4 to
… to reach the heights of Christian Science, man must live in obedience to its divine Principle.
SH 393:16-18
Be firm in your understanding that the divine Mind governs, and that in Science man reflects God’s government.
SH 571:12 listen (only)
… listen and be wise.
II SAMUEL
11:2 ¶ … it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king’s house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon.
3 And David sent and inquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bath-sheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?
4 And David sent messengers, and took her;
5 And the woman conceived, and sent and told David, and said, I am with child.
14 ¶ And it came to pass in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah.
15 And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set ye Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle, and retire ye from him, that he may be smitten, and die.
17 And the men of the city went out, and fought with Joab: and there fell some of the people of the servants of David; and Uriah the Hittite died also.
26 ¶ And when the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she mourned for her husband.
27 And when the mourning was past, David sent and fetched her to his house, and she became his wife, and bare him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased the Lord.
12:15 ¶ And the Lord struck the child that Uriah’s wife bare unto David, and it was very sick.
18 And it came to pass on the seventh day, that the child died.
20 Then David arose from the earth, and washed, and anointed himself, and changed his apparel, and came into the house of the Lord, and worshipped:
24 ¶ And David comforted Bath-sheba his wife, and went in unto her, and lay with her: and she bare a son, and he called his name Solomon: and the Lord loved him.
SH 446:18 (only)
A wrong motive involves defeat.
SH 405:22-24
It were better to be exposed to every plague on earth than to endure the cumulative effects of a guilty conscience.
SH 8:4-6 there
… there is little hope for those who come only spasmodically face to face with their wickedness and then seek to hide it.
SH 104:29-32
Our courts recognize evidence to prove the motive as well as the commission of a crime. Is it not clear that the human mind must move the body to a wicked act?
SH 405:5-11
Christian Science commands man to master the propensities, — to hold hatred in abeyance with kindness, to conquer lust with chastity, revenge with charity, and to overcome deceit with honesty. Choke these errors in their early stages, if you would not cherish an army of conspirators against health, happiness, and success.
PSALMS
11 Teach me thy way, O Lord; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name.
43:3 … send out thy light and thy truth: let them lead me;
67:4 O let the nations be glad and sing for joy:
22:28 For the kingdom is the Lord’s: and he is the governor among the nations.
JOB
38:1 … the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said,
2 Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge?
3 Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me.
4 Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth?
7 When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
33 Knowest thou the ordinances of heaven? canst thou set the dominion thereof in the earth?
40:12 Look on every one that is proud, and bring him low; and tread down the wicked in their place.
JUDGES
8:22 ¶ … the men of Israel said unto Gideon, Rule thou over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son’s son also: for thou hast delivered us from the hand of Midian.
23 And Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: the Lord shall rule over you.
MATTHEW
6:33 Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.
7:12 … all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.
13 ¶ Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:
14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
LUKE
22:42 … not my will, but thine, be done.
SH 171:12-13
Mind’s control over the universe, including man, is no longer an open question, but is demonstrable Science.
SH 270:10
Few deny the hypothesis that intelligence, apart from man and matter, governs the universe; and it is generally admitted that this intelligence is the eternal Mind or divine Principle, Love.
SH 225:14-16
The history of our country, like all history, illustrates the might of Mind, and shows human power to be proportionate to its embodiment of right thinking.
SH 483:32
Christianity will never be based on a divine Principle and so found to be unerring, until its absolute Science is reached. When this is accomplished, neither pride, prejudice, bigotry, nor envy can wash away its foundation, for it is built upon the rock, Christ.
LUKE
21:9 …when ye shall hear of wars and commotions, be not terrified:
25 ¶ … upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity;
26 Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth:
36 Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.
MARK
13:37 … what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.

“True Government is Divine”
By Clayton Bion Craig
Christian Science Sentinel
July 12, 1952
In her Message to The Mother Church for 1900 Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes (p. 10), “Certain elements in human nature would undermine the civic, social, and religious rights and laws of nations and peoples, striking at liberty, human rights, and self-government —and this, too, in the name of God, justice, and humanity!” These false traits of human nature are aggressively asserting themselves in the affairs of mankind today.
We need to be alert to detect these subversive influences seeking to dominate human thought and action, and fearlessly and prayerfully to nullify their spurious claims through the spiritual understanding of the ever-present supremacy of divine law and the clear recognition that “the Lord God omnipotent reigneth” (Rev. 19:6)..
We must resist the temptation to make a reality out of the abuses of man-made governments and to accept corruption, incompetency, injustice, personal favoritism of individuals or groups, and the other phases of error as any part of true government. Rather must we as Christian Scientists utilize our spiritual understanding of true government to nullify and to destroy these human misconceptions of government, that through the spiritually mental process of denying these lies concerning government and recognizing the truth concerning God’s righteous government we shall be doing our part to aid in the ejection of error and to bring out a higher expression of government. One important step in demonstrating a more righteous expression of true government for all is for each individual to order his own affairs in accord with the law of God, government by divine Principle.
The student of Christian Science may need to square his concept of politics and political motives with that of our Leader quoted earlier in this article. He may need to ask himself, “Am I spiritually and mentally giving support to a righteous sense of government, or am I accepting the belief that I am living under a government whose administration is corruptible and which can deprive me of any of my God-bestowed rights?” Man, in his true selfhood, is forever under the control of the divine government, which is forever incorruptible and which bestows all good upon each and all. This fact must become apparent if a sense of corruption and injustice is to be eliminated from human governments and their administration. To recognize man’s true status as the son of God, governed by the divine Principle of his being, is the first step toward establishing a truly righteous sense of government in human affairs.
As men recognize this, human government will more nearly approximate the divine, and man truly governed by his Maker, divine Truth and Love, will appear. How clearly did the Psalmist glimpse this true ideal of government when he sang (Ps. 22:27, 28). “All the ends of the world shall remember and turn unto the Lord: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee. For the kingdom is the Lord’s: and he is the governor among the nations.”
