PERFECT MAN

THE BIBLE

PSALMS

1:1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.

37:31 The law of his God is in his heart;

1:2 … and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

37:37 Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright: for the end of that man is peace.

GENESIS

1:27 … God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

31 And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good.

DEUTERONOMY

18:13 Thou shalt be perfect with the Lord thy God.

32:4 He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.

HABAKKUK

1:12 ¶ Art thou not from everlasting, O Lord my God, mine Holy One?

13 Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity:

EPHESIANS

4:1 I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called,

13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;

17 This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,

18 Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:

20 But ye have not so learned Christ;

21 If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus:

22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;

23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;

24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

AND FROM JAMES IN THE NEW LIVING TRANSLATION:

1:2 Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy.

3 For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow.

4 So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.

5 If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you.

6 But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind.

19 Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry.

20 A man’s anger does not produce the righteousness God desires.

22 But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.

23 For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror.

24 You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like.

25 But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.

AND AGAIN FROM THE KING JAMES VERSION

MATTHEW

13:1 The same day went Jesus out of the house, and sat by the sea side.

15:30  And great multitudes came unto him, having with them those that were lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and cast them down at Jesus’ feet; and he healed them:

13:3 And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, …

44 … the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.

45 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls:

46  Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.

5:48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

I PETER

2:9 … ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:

10 Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God:

3:8 Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous:

10 … he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile:

11 Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it.

12 For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers:

SCIENCE & HEALTH WITH KEY TO THE SCRIPTURES

BY MARY BAKER EDDY.

SH 259:6-12

The Christlike understanding of scientific being and divine healing includes a perfect Principle and idea, — perfect God and perfect man, — as the basis of thought and demonstration.

SH 475:11-13

Man is spiritual and perfect; and because he is spiritual and perfect, he must be so understood in Christian Science.

SH 302:19

The Science of being reveals man as perfect, even as the Father is perfect, because the Soul, or Mind, of the spiritual man is God, the divine Principle of all being, and because this real man is governed by Soul instead of sense, by the law of Spirit, not by the so-called laws of matter.

SH 99:23

The calm, strong currents of true spirituality, the manifestations of which are health, purity, and self-immolation, must deepen human experience, until the beliefs of material existence are seen to be a bald imposition, and sin, disease, and death give everlasting place to the scientific demonstration of divine Spirit and to God’s spiritual, perfect man.

SH 338:1-8

Christian Science, rightly understood, leads to eternal harmony. It brings to light the only living and true God and man as made in His likeness; whereas the opposite belief — that man originates in matter and has beginning and end, that he is both soul and body, both good and evil, both spiritual and material — terminates in discord and mortality, in the error which must be destroyed by Truth.

SH 477:11-17

Christian Science reveals man as the idea of God, and declares the corporeal senses to be mortal and erring illusions. Divine Science shows it to be impossible that a material body, though interwoven with matter’s highest stratum, misnamed
mind, should be man, — the genuine and perfect man, the immortal idea of being, indestructible and eternal.

SH 482:19-22

Jesus was the highest human concept of the perfect man. He was inseparable from Christ, the Messiah, — the divine idea of God outside the flesh.

SH 476:32-5

Jesus beheld in Science the perfect man, who appeared to him where sinning mortal man appears to mortals. In this perfect man the Saviour saw God’s own likeness, and this correct view of man healed the sick. Thus Jesus taught that the kingdom of God is intact, universal, and that man is pure and holy.

SH 248:26

We must form perfect models in thought and look at them continually, or we shall never carve them out in grand and noble lives. Let unselfishness, goodness, mercy, justice, health, holiness, love — the kingdom of heaven — reign within us, and sin, disease, and death will diminish until they finally disappear.

SH 357:4

God is “of purer eyes than to behold evil.”

SH 330:11-15

God is infinite, the only Life, substance, Spirit, or Soul, the only intelligence of the universe, including man. Eye hath neither seen God nor His image and likeness. Neither God nor the perfect man can be discerned by the material senses.

SH 264:13-15, 28

As mortals gain more correct views of God and man, multitudinous objects of creation, which before were invisible, will become visible.

When we learn the way in Christian Science and recognize man’s spiritual being, we shall behold and understand God’s creation, — all the glories of earth and heaven and man.

SH 516:4

The substance, Life, intelligence, Truth, and Love, which constitute Deity, are reflected by His creation; and when we subordinate the false testimony of the
corporeal senses to the facts of Science, we shall see this true likeness and reflection everywhere.

SH 428:22

The great spiritual fact must be brought out that man is, not shall be, perfect and immortal. We must hold forever the consciousness of existence, and sooner or later, through Christ and Christian Science, we must master sin and death. The evidence of man’s immortality will become more apparent, as material beliefs are given up and the immortal facts of being are admitted.

SH 276:19

When we learn in Science how to be perfect even as our Father in heaven is perfect, thought is turned into new and healthy channels, — towards the contemplation of things immortal and away from materiality to the Principle of the universe, including harmonious man.

SH 590:1

KINGDOM OF HEAVEN. The reign of harmony in divine Science; the realm of unerring, eternal, and omnipotent Mind; the atmosphere of Spirit, where Soul is supreme.

SH 208:20

Let us learn of the real and eternal, and prepare for the reign of Spirit, the kingdom of heaven, — the reign and rule of universal harmony, which cannot be lost nor remain forever unseen.

SH 304:16-17, 14-15

Harmony is produced by its Principle, is controlled by it and abides with it.

The perfect man — governed by God, his perfect Principle — is sinless and eternal.

Perfect God And Perfect Man

Herbert E. Bonham

The Christian Science Journal

December 1956

“Our beloved Leader says in Science and Health, ‘The Christlike understanding of scientific being and divine healing includes a perfect Principle and idea,—perfect God and perfect man,—as the basis of thought and demonstration.’

“… it is only through an understanding of God and of man’s relationship to Him that Christian Science healing can be demonstrated. God is infinite Spirit, and man in His image and likeness is spiritual, perfect, and infinite in quality. As one sees himself to be the child of God, he must see that the same is true for all.

“It was Jesus’ understanding of the oneness, or unity, of God and man which enabled him to heal the sick and the sinner. Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health: ‘Jesus beheld in Science the perfect man, who appeared to him where sinning mortal man appears to mortals. In this perfect man the Saviour saw God’s own likeness, and this correct view of man healed the sick.’ Jesus said, ‘Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.’ Free from what? Free from the belief of a life apart from God; from bondage to sinful and diseased beliefs; from the belief of a material existence or the Adam-dream of life and intelligence in matter; and from all belief in death. Nothing but the knowledge of the truth—of perfect God and perfect man—will make men free.

“Man as the image and likeness of God knows no sin, sickness, sorrow, pain, nor death, because in infinite Spirit, Mind, there is no mortality. Like our Master, we must rise into the spiritual sense of being. Then instantaneous healing will be realized. We shall see clearly that there is truly nothing to heal—that there exists only perfect God and perfect man.”
