The Bible & Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy
PSALMS
130:1 Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, O Lord.
30:1 The Lord is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth.
46:1-3; 7,10 Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof…The Lord of hosts is with us;…Be still, and know that I am God:
JONAH
2:1,2,5,7,10 Jonah prayed unto the Lord his God out of the fish’s belly, And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the Lord, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice. …The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head. …When my soul fainted within me I remembered the Lord: and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple…And the Lord spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land.
PSALMS
40:2,4 He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings…Blessed is that man that maketh the Lord his trust, …
SH 265:23
Who that has felt the loss of human peace has not gained stronger desires for spiritual joy? The aspiration after heavenly good comes even before we discover what belongs to wisdom and Love. The loss of earthly hopes and pleasures brightens the ascending path of many a heart. The pains of sense quickly inform us that the pleasures of sense are mortal and that joy is spiritual.
SH 316:3-7
The real man being linked by Science to his Maker, mortals need only turn from sin and lose sight of mortal selfhood to find Christ, the real man and his relation to God, and to recognize the divine sonship.
SH 285:32-1
It is essential to understand, instead of believe, what relates most nearly to the happiness of being.
GENESIS
32:9,11,24-30 Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac,…Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he will come and smite me, and the mother with the children. … And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day. And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him. And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me. And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob. And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed. And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there. And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.
SH 266:20-21,25-27
The sinner makes his own hell by doing evil, and the saint his own heaven by doing right… Perfect and infinite Mind enthroned is heaven. The evil beliefs which originate in mortals are hell.
SH 589:4
Jacob. A corporeal mortal embracing duplicity, repentance, sensualism. Inspiration; the revelation of Science, in which the so-called material senses yield to the spiritual sense of Life and Love.
SH 308:16-28
Jacob was alone, wrestling with error, — struggling with a mortal sense of life, substance, and intelligence as existent in matter with its false pleasures and pains, — when an angel, a message from Truth and Love, appeared to him and smote the sinew, or strength, of his error, till he saw its unreality; and Truth, being thereby understood, gave him spiritual strength in this Peniel of divine Science. Then said the spiritual evangel: “Let me go, for the day breaketh;” that is, the light of Truth and Love dawns upon thee. But the patriarch, perceiving his error and his need of help, did not loosen his hold upon this glorious light until his nature was transformed.
SH 240:19-21
If mortals are not progressive, past failures will be repeated until all wrong work is effaced or rectified. If at present satisfied with wrong-doing, we must learn to loathe it. If at present content with idleness, we must become dissatisfied with it. Remember that mankind must sooner or later, either by suffering or by Science, be convinced of the error that is to be overcome.
SH 260:20-28
A sick body is evolved from sick thoughts. Sickness, disease, and death proceed from fear. Sensualism evolves bad physical and moral conditions. Selfishness and sensualism are educated in mortal mind by the thoughts ever recurring to one’s self, by conversation about the body, and by the expectation of perpetual pleasure or pain from it; and this education is at the expense of spiritual growth.
JEREMIAH
23:23-24 Am I a God at hand…and not a God afar off? Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him…Do not I fill heaven and earth?
ISAIAH
44:22 I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, thy transgressions, and, as a cloud, thy sins: return unto me.
SH 201:7
We cannot build safely on false foundations. Truth makes a new creature, in whom old things pass away and “all things are become new.” Passions, selfishness, false appetites, hatred, fear, all sensuality, yield to spirituality, and the superabundance of being is on the side of God, good.
SH 196:31–7
The press unwittingly sends forth many sorrows and diseases among the human family. It does this by giving names to diseases and by printing long descriptions which mirror images of disease distinctly in thought. A new name for an ailment affects people like a Parisian name for a novel garment. Every one hastens to get it. A minutely described disease costs many a man his earthly days of comfort. What a price for human knowledge!
SH 234:32-3
Evil thoughts, lusts, and malicious purposes cannot go forth, like wandering pollen, from one human mind to another, finding unsuspected lodgment, if virtue and truth build a strong defense.
SH 304:16-17,18-19
Harmony is produced by its Principle, is controlled by it and abides with it. … Man’s happiness is not, therefore, at the disposal of physical sense.
SH 195:11-12,28-5
The point for each one to decide is, whether it is mortal mind or immortal Mind that is causative. … Literary commercialism is lowering the intellectual standard to accommodate the purse and to meet a frivolous demand for amusement instead of for improvement. Incorrect views lower the standard of truth. If materialistic knowledge is power, it is not wisdom. It is but a blind force. Man has “sought out many inventions,” but he has not yet found it true that knowledge can save him from the dire effects of knowledge. The power of mortal mind over its own body is little understood.
SH 205:15
Befogged in error (the error of believing that matter can be intelligent for good or evil), we can catch clear glimpses of God only as the mists disperse, or as they melt into such thinness that we perceive the divine image in some word or deed which indicates the true idea, — the supremacy and reality of good, the nothingness and unreality of evil.
SH 322:26-29
The sharp experiences of belief in the supposititious life of matter, as well as our disappointments and ceaseless woes, turn us like tired children to the arms of divine Love.
SH 60:29-31
Soul has infinite resources with which to bless mankind, and happiness would be more readily attained and would be more secure in our keeping, if sought in Soul.
ISAIAH
41:13 the Lord thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee.
LUKE
13:10-13 he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath. And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself. And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity. And he laid his hands on her: and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God.
SH 548:9-13
How little light or heat reach our earth when clouds cover the sun’s face! So Christian Science can be seen only as the clouds of corporeal sense roll away. Earth has little light or joy for mortals before Life is spiritually learned.
SH 19:6
Jesus aided in reconciling man to God by giving man a truer sense of Love, the divine Principle of Jesus’ teachings, and this truer sense of Love redeems man from the law of matter, sin, and death by the law of Spirit, — the law of divine Love.
PSALMS
18:32 It is God that girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way perfect.
JOHN
5:2-9 Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches. In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water. For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had. And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years. When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole? The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me. Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk. And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked:
MATTHEW
11:28-30 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
PSALMS
30:1,2 …thou hast lifted me up, and hast not made my foes to rejoice over me. O Lord my God, I cried unto thee, and thou hast healed me.
SH 596:20-27
Valley. Depression; meekness; darkness. “Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil.” (Psalm xxiii. 4.) Though the way is dark in mortal sense, divine Life and Love illumine it, destroy the unrest of mortal thought, the fear of death, and the supposed reality of error. Christian Science, contradicting sense, maketh the valley to bud and blossom as the rose.
SH 266:6-15
Would existence without personal friends be to you a blank? Then the time will come when you will be solitary, left without sympathy; but this seeming vacuum is already filled with divine Love. When this hour of development comes, even if you cling to a sense of personal joys, spiritual Love will force you to accept what best promotes your growth. Friends will betray and enemies will slander, until the lesson is sufficient to exalt you; for “man’s extremity is God’s opportunity.”
ISAIAH
58:6,8-9,11 Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?…Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee…Then shalt thou call, and the Lord shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am…And the Lord shall guide thee continually.
PSALMS
16:8-11 I have set the Lord always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope. For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell;…Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.
NEHEMIAH
8:10…the joy of the Lord is your strength.
SH 337:7–10
For true happiness, man must harmonize with his Principle, divine Love; the Son must be in accord with the Father, in conformity with Christ.
SH 14:16-18
Sorrow is turned into joy when the body is controlled by spiritual Life, Truth, and Love.
SH 298:19-20
When the real is attained, which is announced by Science, joy is no longer a trembler, nor is hope a cheat.
SUPPLEMENTAL READINGS
“Lift Up Yourself”
By Isabel F. Bates
The Christian Science Journal, December 1973
…How can we lift up our lives to the level of health and dominion if we are mentally “bowed together,” fearing or grieving or growling deep within ourselves regarding our situations and prospects—or even, perhaps, surrendering to a sense of defeat? …How are we thinking of ourselves? As physical personalities with private little minds inside us, operating (or failing to operate) within the trouble-charged confines of matter, time, and space?…
It is our conscious reflection of God, infinite Mind, Spirit, that constitutes the genuine identity and substance of each one of us. Holding to such truths is prayer in Christian Science. …Decisiveness is essential in Christian Science. Either a thing is true or it isn’t. Is it of God? Then it is true and assured. Is it not of God? Then it is untrue, not authentic, not, in fact, taking place! Facing evil head on in this decisive way is a big step toward destroying it.
The manifestation of divine consciousness, which constitutes the real embodiment of each one of us in his true identity, is eternal in Mind…Even a glimpse of this erases unhappy memories and frightening mental pictures. Then no troubled sense of the past can bow us down or have any power to disturb our everlasting and blessed now…We can lift up ourselves to understand these truths. God gives us the ability to do it—and to know that they operate powerfully in consciousness to bring forth right action in daily life.
…In the face of this truth, discouragement is impossible. We do not have to suffer. … At whatever point we seem to find ourselves, He will lead us forward and care for us each step of the way…
