Readings from the Bible And Science & Health With Key to the Scriptures
By Mary Baker Eddy
PSALMS
53:2 God looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, that did seek God.
5 There were they in great fear, where no fear was:
56:1 Be merciful unto me, O God:
3 What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.
HABBAKUK
1:12 Art thou not from everlasting, O Lord my God, mine Holy One?
13 Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity:
ISAIAH
41:10 Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee;
I JOHN
4:18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: . . . He that feareth is not made perfect in love.
II TIMOTHY
1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
SCIENCE AND HEALTH
SH 92:26
The foundation of evil is laid on a belief in something besides God. This belief tends to support two opposite powers, instead of urging the claims of Truth alone. The mistake of thinking that error can be real, when it is merely the absence of truth, leads to belief in the superiority of error.
SH 447:27
The sick are not healed merely by declaring there is no sickness, but by knowing that there is none.
Disease is an experience of so-called mortal mind. It is fear made manifest on the body.
SH 411:21
Disease is always induced by a false sense mentally entertained, not destroyed.
Disease is an image of thought externalized. The mental state is called a material state. Whatever is cherished in mortal mind as the physical condition is imaged forth on the body.
SH 377:26-31
The cause of all so-called disease is mental, a mortal fear, a mistaken belief or conviction of the necessity and power of ill-health; also a fear that Mind is helpless to defend the life of man and incompetent to control it. Without this ignorant human belief, any circumstance is of itself powerless to produce suffering.
SH 411:27-28
Always begin your treatment by allaying the fear of patients.
. . . cling steadfastly to God and His idea. Allow nothing but His likeness to abide in your thought. Let neither fear nor doubt overshadow your clear sense and calm trust, that the recognition of life harmonious–as Life eternally is–can destroy any painful sense of, or belief in, that which Life is not.
SH 411:32-1
If you succeed in wholly removing the fear, your patient is healed.
JOHN
8:31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;
32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
12 . . . I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
42 . . . If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.
44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
I JOHN
2:22 Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ?
4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected:
SCIENCE AND HEALTH
SH 554:20-22
Jesus defined this opposite of God and His creation better than we can, when he said, “He is a liar, and the father of it.”
SH 469:13-17 The
The exterminator of error is the great truth that God, good, is the only Mind, and that the supposititious opposite of infinite Mind — called devil or evil — is not Mind, is not Truth, but error, without intelligence or reality.
SH 186:11
Evil is a negation, because it is the absence of truth. It is nothing, because it is the absence of something. It is unreal, because it presupposes the absence of God, the omnipotent and omnipresent. Every mortal must learn that there is neither power nor reality in evil.
SH 71:1-4
Nothing is real and eternal, — nothing is Spirit, — but God and His idea. Evil has no reality. It is neither person, place, nor thing, but is simply a belief, an illusion of material sense.
SH 287:22-23
Error is false, mortal belief; it is illusion, without spiritual identity or foundation, and it has no real existence.
SH 209:2
It is the mortal belief which makes the body discordant and diseased in proportion as ignorance, fear, or human will governs mortals.
Resist evil–error of every sort–and it will flee from you.
II CHRONICLES
16:12 And Asa in the thirty and ninth year of his reign was diseased in his feet, until his disease was exceeding great: yet in his disease he sought not to the Lord, but to the physicians.
13¶ And Asa slept with his fathers, and died in the one and fortieth year of his reign.
JOB
3:25 … the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me.
MARK
9:17 And one of the multitude answered and said, Master, I have brought unto thee my son, which hath a dumb spirit;
22 And ofttimes it hath cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him: but if thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us.
23 Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.
24 And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.
25 When Jesus saw that the people came running together, he rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him.
26 And the spirit cried, and rent him sore, and came out of him:
28 And when he was come into the house, his disciples asked him privately, Why could not we cast him out?
29 And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.
SCIENCE AND HEALTH
SH 214:19-21
Mortals are inclined to fear and to obey what they consider a material body more than they do a spiritual God.
SH 376:30
To fear and admit the power of disease, is to paralyze mental and scientific demonstration.
SH 476:32-4
Jesus beheld in Science the perfect man, who appeared to him where sinning mortal man appears to mortals. In this perfect man the Saviour saw God’s own likeness, and this correct view of man healed the sick.
SH 419:28
To succeed in healing, you must conquer your own fears as well as those of your patients, and rise into higher and holier consciousness.
PSALMS
139:7 Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?
8 If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.
9 If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea;
10 Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.
23:6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.
DEUTERONOMY
7:7 The Lord did not set his love upon you, nor choose you, because ye were more in number than any people; for ye were the fewest of all people:
8 But because the Lord loved you, …
9 Know therefore that the Lord thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations;
MALACHI
4:2 ¶ . . . unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings;
SCIENCE AND HEALTH
SH 301:17-20
As God is substance and man is the divine image and likeness, man should wish for, and in reality has, only the substance of good, the substance of Spirit, not matter.
SH 471:18-19
God is infinite, therefore ever present, and there is no other power nor presence.
SH 228:25-27
There is no power apart from God. Omnipotence has all-power, and to acknowledge any other power is to dishonor God.
SH 463:27-28
There is a law of God applicable to healing, and it is a spiritual law instead of material.
SH 171:25-27
The so-called laws of matter are nothing but false beliefs that intelligence and life are present where Mind is not.
SH 302:19
The Science of being reveals man as perfect, even as the Father is perfect, because the Soul, or Mind, of the spiritual man is God, the divine Principle of all being, and because this real man is governed by Soul instead of sense, by the law of Spirit, not by the so-called laws of matter.

Miscellaneous Writings 25:12; 255:20-5
by Mary Baker Eddy
Science, understood, translates matter into Mind, rejects all other theories of causation, restores the spiritual and original meaning of the Scriptures, and explains the teachings and life of our Lord. It is religion’s ‘new tongue,’ with ‘signs following,’ spoken of by St. Mark. It gives God’s infinite meaning to mankind, healing the sick, casting out evil, and raising the spiritually dead. Christianity is Christlike only as it reiterates the word, repeats the works, and manifests the spirit of Christ.
I claim for healing by Christian Science the following advantages: —
First: It does away with material medicine, and recognizes the fact that the antidote for sickness, as well as for sin, may be found in God, the divine Mind.
Second: It is more effectual than drugs, and cures where they fail, because it is this divine antidote, and metaphysics is above physics.
Third: Persons who have been healed by Christian Science are not only cured of their belief in disease, but they are at the same time improved morally. The body
is governed by Mind, and mortal mind must be corrected in order to make the body harmonious.”
“Identity”
By L. Ivimy Gwalter
Christian Science Journal
June 1942
Every problem in human experience reduces itself to a belief of incompleteness. Poverty is incompleteness, the belief that supply is lacking; sickness, the belief that health is lacking; death, the belief that life has ceased or changed or departed. Sin in all its forms is the belief that man is incomplete, unsatisfied, and that because of his incompleteness he steals, lies, lusts, hates, and murders. Healing in Christian Science is the demonstration of Paul’s statement, “You are complete in him”—Christ. Man is complete as the divine idea of God.
God’s creation is always at the standpoint of perfection. In divine consciousness there is no imperfect concept; hence there is no incurable disease, no hopeless situation, no helpless mortal. Furthermore, because man reflects the infinite inclusion of Diety, he includes all ideas. He manifests the self-sufficiency of divine Mind. He includes the universe—the full expression of God. Self-sufficiency is his being. Thus he does not have to get supply; he includes supply. Likewise does he include safety, home, health, satisfaction, peace, happiness, activity, usefulness, companionship, everything that goes to make up the completeness of being.
“How God Cares for the Human Need”
By Gaston Cherriere
Christian Science Sentinel
January 26, 1946
God, the great Giver of all good, knows only the perfection of His spiritual universe. He knows nothing of the problems of human existence. It is His nature to express Himself universally and impartially. He gives of His vivifying and health-giving spirit abundantly and without discrimination, to small and great, to just and unjust, to good and bad. All who turn their thoughts to God and acknowledge Him as supreme good and the divine Principle of all harmony, receive His light and are blessed.
In perfect and immortal Spirit “we live, and move, and have our being.” Spirit is the only substance, the sole presence, the only law and power. God is always with us and His spiritual ideas are always at hand for us to use.
In her work entitled “Miscellaneous Writings” our revered Leader discusses and illumines the question of the human need in a way which leaves no doubt in the thought of the student, when she writes (p. 307), “God gives you His spiritual ideas, and in turn, they give you daily supplies.” In order to be benefited by these spiritual ideas, however, we must realize our possession of them.
Let us remember that demonstration in Christian Science consists of substituting the right or divine idea for the material concept, which is always erroneous. It is good to know that in any demonstration it is the power of God and the right idea emanating from Him which bring about the healing result.
Mrs. Eddy counseled her followers to begin their mental work by affirming the truth of being, and to do that we need to know and utilize the right idea about God, man, universe, substance, law, presence, power, and so forth. We need also to find the right idea which reverses a discordant situation, for it is the right idea and that alone which brings the solution of our problem.
If, as we believe, God, divine all-powerful Love, meets the human need, how can we at the same time believe that He can do it while our heart is filled with enmity, with evil or hateful thoughts toward our neighbor? God is one and supreme, without an opposite, and He requires all our thoughts. Let us give Him then our whole heart, and let Love guide our every thought, word, and deed. Then the human need, which is but a lack of spirituality, will be abundantly supplied.
Finding God, Good
“Finding God, Good”
By M. Adelaide Holton
Christian Science Sentinel
November 3, 1923
To find God is always to find spiritual good. It is to find the only Father-Mother, the only cause, presence, substance, power, action, and law, here and now. To find the greatness and broadness of God’s goodness is to find health when sickness seems real; light when clouds befog the vision; supply when lack seems present; and courage in the midst of discouragement. To find God, good, at all times is to win a new sense of regenerated life, putting off the old for the new, entering the Holy of Holies when storm, darkness, superstition, or fear seem present. This is possible to-day for those who are actively relying on the spiritual truth of being with some measure of understanding.
There is no place in which God cannot be found; no condition which divine law cannot govern; no home in which harmony cannot be manifested; no lack which cannot be supplied; and no darkness which cannot be displaced by the sunlight of God, good. Through this process of knowing we eliminate error. On page 201 of “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures” by Mary Baker Eddy, we read: “The way to extract error from mortal mind is to pour in truth through flood-tides of Love. Christian perfection is won on no other basis.”
To find God in every situation, every hour of every day, regardless of the struggle involved and the striving necessary, is to prove that Christian Science is practical. It is the daily work of all who have named the name of Science. We know, and we must live what we know. “By their fruits ye shall know them.”
“In our sickness, in our health;
In our want, or in our wealth,
If we look to God in prayer,
God is present everywhere.”
