WEDNESDAY EVENING READINGS APRIL 25, 2012 “GOVERNMENT IS OF GOD”
THE BIBLE:
PSALMS
147:5 Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is infinite. 31:3 … thou art my rock and my fortress; therefore for thy name’s sake lead me, and guide me. 43:3 … send out thy light and thy truth: let them lead me; 62:11 God hath spoken once; twice have I heard this; that power belongeth unto God.
II CHRONICLES
20: … O Lord God of our fathers, art not thou God in heaven? and rulest not thou over all the kingdoms of the heathen? and in thine hand is there not power and might, so that none is able to withstand thee?
EXODUS
20:1 And God spake all these words, saying, 3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. 4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: 5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: 7 Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; 8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. 12 ¶Honour thy father and thy mother: 13 Thou shalt not kill. 14 Thou shalt not commit adultery. 15 Thou shalt not steal. 16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour. 17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s. 20 And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not.
I KINGS
3:5 In Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night: and God said, Ask what I shall give thee. 6 And Solomon said, Thou hast shewed unto thy servant David my father great mercy, according as he walked before thee in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with thee; and thou hast kept for him this great kindness, that thou hast given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day.
7 And now, O Lord my God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of David my father: and I am but a little child: I know not how to go out or come in. 9 Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?
10 And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing. 11 And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life; neither hast asked riches for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies; but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern judgment; 12 Behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee. 14 And if thou wilt walk in my ways, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as thy father David did walk, then I will lengthen thy days.
MICAH
4:1 … in the last days it shall come to pass, that the mountain of the house of the Lord shall be established in the top of the mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills; and people shall flow unto it. 2 And many nations shall come, and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, and to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths:
3 ¶ And he shall judge among many people, and rebuke strong nations afar off; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.
5 For all people will walk every one in the name of his god, and we will walk in the name of the Lord our God for ever and ever.
ISAIAH
9:2 The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined. 6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
2
7 Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever.
MATTHEW
19:1 And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these sayings, he departed from Galilee, and came into the coasts of Judaea beyond Jordan; 2 And great multitudes followed him; and he healed them there. 22:15 ¶ Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk.
16 And they sent out unto him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man: for thou regardest not the person of men. 17 Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not?
18 But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites? 19 Shew me the tribute money. And they brought unto him a penny. 20 And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription?
21 They say unto him, Caesar’s. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s.
PSALMS
67:3 Let the people praise thee, O God; let all the people praise thee. 4 O let the nations be glad and sing for joy: for thou shalt judge the people righteously, and govern the nations upon earth.
SCIENCE & HEALTH WITH KEY TO THE SCRIPTURES BY MARY BAKER EDDY
S&H 149:26 God (to 4th ,)
God, divine Mind, governs all, not partially but supremely,
S&H 171:12-13
Mind’s control over the universe, including man, is no longer an open question, but is demonstrable Science.
S&H 379:6
The real jurisdiction of the world is in Mind, controlling every effect and recognizing all causation as vested in divine Mind.
3
S&H 270:10
Few deny the hypothesis that intelligence, apart from man and matter, governs the universe; and it is generally admitted that this intelligence is the eternal Mind or divine Principle, Love.
S&H 393:16-18
Be firm in your understanding that the divine Mind governs, and that in Science man reflects God’s government.
S&H 151:21-23
The human mind has no power to kill or to cure, and it has no control over God’s man.
S&H 225:14-16
The history of our country, like all history, illustrates the might of Mind, and shows human power to be proportionate to its embodiment of right thinking.
S&H 106:6
Like our nation, Christian Science has its Declaration of Independence. God has endowed man with inalienable rights, among which are self-government, reason, and conscience. Man is properly self‐governed only when he is guided rightly and governed by his Maker, divine Truth and Love.
S&H 225:2
Whatever enslaves man is opposed to the divine government. Truth makes man free.
S&H 94:12
The eastern empires and nations owe their false government to the misconceptions of Deity there prevalent. Tyranny, intolerance, and bloodshed, wherever found, arise from the belief that the infinite is formed after the pattern of mortal personality, passion, and impulse.
S&H 239:11-13
The wicked man is not the ruler of his upright neighbor. Let it be understood that success in error is defeat in Truth.
S&H 128:4-6
The term Science, properly understood, refers only to the laws of God and to His government of the universe, inclusive of man.
S&H 96:12-18. 11
This material world is even now becoming the arena for conflicting forces. On one side there will be discord and dismay; on the other side there will be Science and peace.
4
The breaking up of material beliefs may seem to be famine and pestilence, want and woe, sin, sickness, and death, which assume new phases until their nothingness appears. “The darkest hour precedes the dawn.”
S&H 405:2 (only), 5-9
Hatred inflames the brutal propensities. Christian Science commands man to master the propensities, — to hold hatred in abeyance with kindness, to conquer lust with chastity, revenge with charity, and to overcome deceit with honesty.
S&H 420:3-4
Truth not error, Love not hate, Spirit not matter, governs man.
S&H 224:28 (only), 29-31
Truth brings the elements of liberty. The power of God brings deliverance to the captive. No power can withstand divine Love.
S&H 19:29-3
Jesus urged the commandment, “Thou shalt have no other gods before me,” which may be rendered: Thou shalt have no belief of Life as mortal; thou shalt not know evil, for there is one Life, — even God, good. He rendered “unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s.”
S&H 182:19-22
Obedience to material law prevents full obedience to spiritual law, — the law which overcomes material conditions and puts matter under the feet of Mind.
S&H 180:25
When man is governed by God, the ever-present Mind who understands all things, man knows that with God all things are possible. The only way to this living Truth, which heals the sick, is found in the Science of divine Mind as taught and demonstrated by Christ Jesus.
S&H 316:12 (only), 20
Jesus represented Christ, the true idea of God. Christ presents the indestructible man, whom Spirit creates , constitutes, and governs. Christ illustrates that blending with God, his divine Principle, which gives man dominion over all the earth.
S&H 225:21
Love is the liberator.
5
S&H 227:16 (only), 18, 24-26
God made man free. “Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.” Love and Truth make free, but evil and error lead into captivity. Citizens of the world, accept the “glorious liberty of the children of God,” and be free! This is your divine right.
S&H 125:16-17
Reflecting God’s government, man is self-governed.
S&H 17:12-15
For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. For God is infinite, all-power, all Life, Truth, Love, over all, and All.
PUBLICATIONS QUOTATION
The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany By Mary Baker Eddy
“In reply to a number of requests for an expression of her political views, she has given out this statement: — I am asked, ‘What are your politics?’ I have none, in reality, other than to help support a righteous government; to love God supremely, and my neighbor as myself.
“The government of divine Love is supreme. Love rules the universe, and its edict hath gone forth: “Thou shalt have no other gods before me,” and “Love thy neighbor as thyself.” Let us have the molecule of faith that removes mountains, — faith armed with the understanding of Love, as in divine Science, where right reigneth. The revered President and Congress of our favored land are in God’s hands.”
