The Bible & Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures
ISAIAH
40:31 they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
PSALMS
62:5 My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him.
JOB
3:25 the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come upon me.
SH 213:3
Of a man it has been said, “As he thinketh in his heart, so is he;”
SH 380:28
Nothing is more disheartening than to believe that there is a power opposite to God, or good, and that God endows this opposing power with strength to be used against Himself, against Life, health, harmony.
SH 167:7
Our proportionate admission of the claims of good or of evil determines the harmony of our existence, — our health, our longevity, and our Christianity.
SH 254:10-12
When we wait patiently on God and seek Truth righteously, He directs our path.
GENESIS
12:1,2 Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee: And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: …So Abram departed, as the Lord had spoken unto him; … and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran.
PSALMS
39:7 What wait I for? My hope is in thee.
JEREMIAH
29:11-13 I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you. And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.
PROVERBS (International Standard Version)
24:13,14 My son, eat honey, because it’s good for you;…drippings from the honeycomb are sweet to your taste; Keep in mind that wisdom is like that for your soul; if you find it, there will be a future for you, and what you hope for won’t be cut short.
ROMANS (J.B. Phillips)
15:4 all those words which were written long ago are meant to teach us today; that when we read in the scriptures of the endurance of men and of all the help that God gave them in those days, we may be encouraged to go on hoping in our own time.
SH 380:4
Truth is always the victor.
SH 23:27-1
“Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief!” expresses the helplessness of a blind faith; whereas the injunction, “Believe . . . and thou shalt be saved!” demands self-reliant trustworthiness, which includes spiritual understanding and confides all to God. The Hebrew verb to believe means also to be firm or to be constant.
SH 367:30-4
Because Truth is infinite, error should be known as nothing. Because Truth is omnipotent in goodness, error, Truth’s opposite, has no might. Evil is but the counterpoise of nothingness. The greatest wrong is but a supposititious opposite of the highest right. The confidence inspired by Science lies in the fact that Truth is real and error is unreal.
MATTHEW
13:54-58 when he was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works? Is not this the carpenter’s son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas? And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this man all these things? And they were offended in him…Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house. And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief.
HEBREWS
11:6…he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
MARK
10:46-52… as he went out of Jericho with his disciples and a great number of people, blind Bartimæus, the son of Timæus, sat by the highway side begging. And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out, and say, Jesus, thou son of David, have mercy on me. And many charged him that he should hold his peace: but he cried the more a great deal, Thou son of David, have mercy on me. And Jesus stood still, and commanded him to be called. And they call the blind man, saying unto him, Be of good comfort, rise; he calleth thee. And he, casting away his garment, rose, and came to Jesus. And Jesus answered and said unto him, What wilt thou that I should do unto thee? The blind man said unto him, Lord, that I might receive my sight. And Jesus said unto him, Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole. And immediately he received his sight, and followed Jesus in the way.
SH 420:17-18, 24
The fact that Truth overcomes both disease and sin reassures depressed hope…Tell the sick that they can meet disease fearlessly, if they only realize that divine Love gives them all power over every physical action and condition.
SH 209:31-32
Spiritual sense is a conscious, constant capacity to understand God.
SH 323:32-2
Willingness to become as a little child and to leave the old for the new, renders thought receptive of the advanced idea.
ACTS
3:1-8 Peter and John went up together into the temple at the hour of prayer…And a certain man lame from his mother’s womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms of them that entered into the temple; Who seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple asked an alms. And Peter, fastening his eyes upon him with John, said, Look on us. And he gave heed unto them, expecting to receive something of them. Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk. And he took him by the right hand, and lifted him up: and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength. And he leaping up stood, and walked, and entered with them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God.
SH 1:1
The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God, — a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love.
SH 167:22-26
It is not wise to take a halting and half-way position or to expect to work equally with Spirit and matter, Truth and error. There is but one way — namely, God and His idea — which leads to spiritual being.
SH 167:30
Only through radical reliance on Truth can scientific healing power be realized.
SH 298:19-20
When the real is attained, which is announced by Science, joy is no longer a trembler, nor is hope a cheat.
MATTHEW
6:8… your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.
I JOHN
5:14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:
HEBREWS
11:1,6 faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
MATTHEW
8:5-10,13…Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him, And saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented. And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him. The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed. For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it. When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel…And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour…
21:22… all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.
MARK
11:22-23…Have faith in God…whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.
5:25-30,33-34 a certain woman, which had an issue of blood twelve years, And had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse, When she had heard of Jesus, came in the press behind, and touched his garment. For she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole. And straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague. And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him, turned him about in the press, and said, Who touched my clothes?… the woman fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth. And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.
SH 473:8-10
God is everywhere, and nothing apart from Him is present or has power.
SH 6:17-18
“God is Love.” More than this we cannot ask, higher we cannot look, farther we cannot go.
SH 426:5-9
The discoverer of Christian Science finds the path less difficult when she has the high goal always before her thoughts, than when she counts her footsteps in endeavoring to reach it. When the destination is desirable, expectation speeds our progress.
PROVERBS (God’s Word Translation)
23:18 There is indeed a future, and your hope will never be cut off.
MATTHEW
7:7-10 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
9:27-30…two blind men followed him, crying…Thou Son of David, have mercy on us…and Jesus saith unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said…Yea, Lord. Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you. And their eyes were opened; …
JOHN
14:1-3 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you…I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
15:16,17 Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you. These things I command you, that ye love one another.
MARK
11:24 Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.
I CORINTHIANS
2:9 …Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.
SH 494:10-11
Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need.
SH 326:20-21
Working and praying with true motives, your Father will open the way.
SH 261:27
Fixing your gaze on the realities supernal, you will rise to the spiritual consciousness of being, even as the bird which has burst from the egg and preens its wings for a skyward flight.
SH vii:1-2
To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings.
SUPPLEMENTAL READINGS
“Proofs of God’s Care”
By Clifford A. Woodard
Christian Science Sentinel, December 6, 1930
The very fact that a problem has come to us is proof that God has given us the ability to solve it. It is also proof that we are ready for the step in progress that is involved in the solution of that particular problem. Then let us deal with our problems joyously, with the expectation of victory, and with the persistence that does not stop short of complete accomplishment. Whatever the nature of our problem may be, and however difficult it may seem to us, we may be sure that the solution is already established in divine Mind. Then, if we hold steadfastly to that Mind in the time of trial, we cannot fail to gain the proof of God’s care.
PROSE WORKS
By Mary Baker Eddy
Divine Love is our hope, strength, and shield. We have nothing to fear when Love is at the helm of thought, but everything to enjoy on earth and in heaven. (Mis. 113:24)
