A STRONG DEFENSE

THE BIBLE

JOB

3:25 … the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me.

PSALMS

91:1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

2 I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.

9 Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;

10 There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.

11 For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.

62:1 Truly my soul waiteth upon God: from him cometh my salvation.

2 He only is my rock and my salvation; he is my defence; I shall not be greatly moved.

26:6 I will wash mine hands in innocency:

16:1 Preserve me, O God: for in thee do I put my trust.

DANIEL

6:16 … the king commanded, and they brought Daniel, and cast him into the den of lions.

17 And a stone was brought, and laid upon the mouth of the den;

19 Then the king arose very early in the morning, and went in haste unto the den of lions.

20 And when he came to the den, he cried with a lamentable voice unto Daniel: and the king spake and said to Daniel, O Daniel, servant of the living God, is thy God, whom thou servest continually, able to deliver thee from the lions?

21 Then said Daniel unto the king, O king, live for ever.

22 My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions’ mouths, that they have not hurt me: forasmuch as before him innocency was found in me; and also before thee, O king, have I done no hurt.

JOHN

14:22 Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world?

23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.

26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

8:12 … I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

13 The Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou bearest record of thyself; thy record is not true.

19 … Jesus answered, Ye neither know me, nor my Father: if ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also.

44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

47 He that is of God heareth God’s words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.

MATTHEW

15:1 Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, saying,

2 Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread.

10 ¶And he called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand:

11 Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.

18 … those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.

19  For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:

20 These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man.

EPHESIANS

6:10  … my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.

11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

SCIENCE & HEALTH WITH KEY TO THE SCRIPTURES

BY MARY BAKER EDDY

SH 387:27

The history of Christianity furnishes sublime proofs of the supporting influence and protecting power bestowed on man by his heavenly Father, omnipotent Mind, who gives man faith and understanding whereby to defend himself, not only from temptation, but from bodily suffering.

SH 82:31-2

In a world of sin and sensuality hastening to a greater development of power, it is wise earnestly to consider whether it is the human mind or the divine Mind which is influencing one.

SH 234:25-27

Sin and disease must be thought before they can be manifested. You must control evil thoughts in the first instance, or they will control you in the second.

SH 234:31-3

Evil thoughts and aims reach no farther and do no more harm than one’s belief permits. Evil thoughts, lusts, and malicious purposes cannot go forth, like wandering pollen, from one human mind to another, finding unsuspected lodgment, if virtue and truth build a strong defence.

SH 495:31-5

In the Science of Mind, you will soon ascertain that error cannot destroy error. You will also learn that in Science there is no transfer of evil suggestions from one mortal to another, for there is but one Mind, and this ever-present omnipotent Mind is reflected by man and governs the entire universe.

SH 154:16-21

If a child is exposed to contagion or infection, the mother is frightened and says, “My child will be sick.”  The law of mortal mind and her own fears govern her child more than the child’s mind governs itself, and they produce the very results which might have been prevented through the opposite understanding.

SH 220:16

Colds, coughs, and contagion are engendered solely by human theories.

SH 153:25

We weep because others weep, we yawn because they yawn, and we have smallpox because others have it; but mortal mind, not matter, contains and carries the infection. When this mental contagion is understood, we shall be more careful of our mental conditions, and we shall avoid loquacious tattling about disease, as we would avoid advocating crime. Neither sympathy nor society should ever tempt us to cherish error in any form, and certainly we should not be error’s advocate.

SH 170:28-1

The description of man as purely physical, or as both material and spiritual, — but in either case dependent upon his physical organization, — is the Pandora box, from which all ills have gone forth, especially despair.

SH 292:19

Explaining the origin of material man and mortal mind, Jesus said: “Why do ye not understand my speech? Even because ye cannot hear my word. Ye are of your father, the devil [evil], and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.”

SH 330:27 (only)

Evil is nothing, no thing, mind, nor power.

SH 102:30 (only)

Mankind must learn that evil is not power.

SH 399:29-1

Our Master asked: “How can one enter into a strong man’s house and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man?”

SH 400:4-6

Mortal mind is “the strong man,” which must be held in subjection before its influence upon health and morals can be removed.

SH 392:24 Stand (only), 27-32

Stand porter at the door of thought.

When the condition is present which you say induces disease, whether it be air, exercise, heredity, contagion, or accident, then perform your office as porter and shut out these unhealthy thoughts and fears.  Exclude from mortal mind the offending errors; then the body cannot suffer from them.

SH 176:24-27

One disease is no more real than another. All disease is the result of education, and disease can carry its ill-effects no farther than mortal mind maps out the way.

SH 234:9-12

We should become more familiar with good than with evil, and guard against false beliefs as watchfully as we bar our doors against the approach of thieves and murderers.

SH 384:3-12

We should relieve our minds from the depressing thought that we have transgressed a material law and must of necessity pay the penalty. Let us reassure ourselves with the law of Love. God never punishes man for doing right, for honest labor, or for deeds of kindness, though they expose him to fatigue, cold, heat, contagion. If man seems to incur the penalty through matter, this is but a belief of mortal mind, not an enactment of wisdom, and man has only to enter his protest against this belief in order to annul it.

SH 393:12-13

Rise in the strength of Spirit to resist all that is unlike good.

SH 571:15-19

At all times and under all circumstances, overcome evil with good. Know thyself, and God will supply the wisdom and the occasion for a victory over evil. Clad in the panoply of Love, human hatred cannot reach you.

“The Power of Innocence”

By Harold Molter

The Christian Science Sentinel – May 12, 1956

“The innocent mind rooted in Christ is safe because there is nothing in it to respond to evil or materiality.

“Evil cannot touch the pure in heart, those whose thoughts are rooted and grounded in Truth. Innocence and purity are divine qualities and as such are a law of annihilation to error in whatever form it appears.

“When the prophet Daniel was brought before the king and accused of worshiping his own God, he was put into a den of lions. What protected him from being attacked by these beasts? His innocency, his purity of thought, in which there was no resentment, no unlovely response to the evil designs of his enemies to get rid of him.

“When asked by the king if his God had saved him, Daniel answered, ‘My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions’ mouths, that they have not hurt me: forasmuch as before him innocency was found in me; and also before thee, O king, have I done no hurt.’

“Innocence is one of the qualities of God. And since God is the only power and the only presence—is infinite, All—His whole creation is innocent, pure, holy; therefore it can have no knowledge of sin or discord. Our work as Christian Scientists is to identify our thoughts with the fact of man’s innocence. This supplies us with a strong defense, whereby the claims of error are rendered harmless and helpless, just as the lions were quieted in the presence of Daniel’s innocency.”
