Hymns: 99, 49, 207
The Bible & Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy
91:1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
22:37-39 Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
15:10,6 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love…If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.
6:24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
We cannot serve two masters nor perceive divine Science with the material senses…To have one God and avail yourself of the power of Spirit, you must love God supremely.
91:2 I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.
22:1-3 David spake unto the Lord the words of this song in the day that the Lord had delivered him out of the hand of all his enemies, and out of the hand of Saul: And he said, The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour;.
II CHRONICLES (Good News Translation)
16:9 The Lord keeps close watch over the whole world, to give strength to those whose hearts are loyal to him.
If we trust matter, we distrust Spirit.
Step by step will those who trust Him find that “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
91:3 Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.
25:15 Mine eyes are ever toward the Lord; for he shall pluck my feet out of the net.
ECCLESIASTES (Easy to read version)
9:12 You never know when hard times will come. Like fish in a net or birds in a snare, people are often trapped by some disaster that suddenly falls on them.
When the illusion of sickness or sin tempts you, cling steadfastly to God and His idea. Allow nothing but His likeness to abide in your thought. Let neither fear nor doubt overshadow your clear sense and calm trust, that the recognition of life harmonious — as Life eternally is — can destroy any painful sense of, or belief in, that which Life is not. Let Christian Science, instead of corporeal sense, support your understanding of being, and this understanding will supplant error with Truth, replace mortality with immortality, and silence discord with harmony.
91:4 He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.
2:10–12 Then she fell on her face… and said unto him, Why have I found grace in thine eyes, that thou shouldest take knowledge of me, seeing I am a stranger? And Boaz answered…It hath fully been shewed me, all that thou hast done unto thy mother in law since the death of thine husband: and how thou hast left thy father and thy mother, and the land of thy nativity, and art come unto a people which thou knewest not heretofore. The Lord recompense thy work, and a full reward be given thee of the Lord God of Israel, under whose wings thou art come to trust.
The rich in spirit help the poor in one grand brotherhood, all having the same Principle, or Father; and blessed is that man who seeth his brother’s need and supplieth it, seeking his own in another’s good.
91:5 Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;
3:24 When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.
Christian Scientists, be a law to yourselves that mental malpractice cannot harm you either when asleep or when awake.
91:6 Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.
43:2 When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.
3:28… Nebuchadnezzar spake, and said, Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed–nego, who hath sent his angel, and delivered his servants that trusted in him, …
“The effects of medicine on the human system are in the highest degree uncertain; except, indeed, that it has already destroyed more lives than war, pestilence, and famine, all combined.”
91:7 A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.
1:30 The Lord your God which goeth before you, he shall fight for you…
46:1-3,6 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof…The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved: he uttered his voice, the earth melted.
Human sense may well marvel at discord, while, to a diviner sense, harmony is the real and discord the unreal. We may well be astonished at sin, sickness, and death. We may well be perplexed at human fear; and still more astounded at hatred, which lifts its hydra head, showing its horns in the many inventions of evil. But why should we stand aghast at nothingness?
91:8 Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.
24:19, 20 Fret not thyself because of evil men, neither be thou envious at the wicked; For there shall be no reward to the evil man; the candle of the wicked shall be put out.
SH 240:27–29; 241:8–9
In trying to undo the errors of sense one must pay fully and fairly the utmost farthing, until all error is finally brought into subjection to Truth…The sensualist’s affections are as imaginary, whimsical, and unreal as his pleasures.
SH 449:7-8 (to 1st .)
The wrong done another reacts most heavily against one’s self.
91:9-11 Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.
For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.
EXODUS (New English Translation)
23:20-22 “I am going to send an angel before you to protect you as you journey and to bring you into the place that I have prepared. Take heed because of him, and obey his voice; do not rebel against him, for he will not pardon your transgressions, for my name is in him. But if you diligently obey him and do all that I command, then I will be an enemy to your enemies, and I will be an adversary to your adversaries.
Angels are not etherealized human beings, evolving animal qualities in their wings; but they are celestial visitants, flying on spiritual, not material, pinions. Angels are pure thoughts from God, winged with Truth and Love, no matter what their individualism may be.
By giving earnest heed to these spiritual guides they tarry with us, and we entertain “angels unawares.”
91:12 They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.
3:23 shalt thou walk in thy way safely, and thy foot shall not stumble…
To admit that sickness is a condition over which God has no control, is to presuppose that omnipotent power is powerless on some occasions.
91:13 Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.
6:19-22 the king arose very early in the morning, and went in haste unto the den of lions. And when he came to the den, he cried with a lamentable voice unto Daniel: and the king spake and said to Daniel, O Daniel, servant of the living God, is thy God, whom thou servest continually, able to deliver thee from the lions? Then said Daniel unto the king, O king, live for ever. My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions’ mouths, that they have not hurt me: forasmuch as before him innocency was found in me; and also before thee, O king, have I done no hurt.
LUKE (J.B. Phillips)
10:19…I have given you the power to tread on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the enemy’s power—there is nothing at all that can do you any harm.
There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter.
91:14 Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.
4:8-11… the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.
If Mind was first chronologically, is first potentially, and must be first eternally, then give to Mind the glory, honor, dominion, and power everlastingly due its holy name.
Enable us to know, — as in heaven, so on earth, — God is omnipotent, supreme.
91:15 He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.
4:18 the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me unto his heavenly kingdom:
37:23-24 …when Joseph was come unto his brethren…they stripped Joseph out of his coat…and cast him into a pit: and the pit was empty, there was no water in it.
39:2,21 And the Lord was with Joseph…and shewed him mercy…
41:38,41 And Pharaoh said unto his servants, Can we find such a one as this is, a man in whom the spirit of God is…And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, See, I have set thee over all the land of Egypt.
29:12, 13 Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you. And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.
Know thyself, and God will supply the wisdom and the occasion for a victory over evil. Clad in the panoply of Love, human hatred cannot reach you.
91:16 With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.
3:16 God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Our Master fully and finally demonstrated divine Science in his victory over death and the grave.
Being is holiness, harmony, immortality. It is already proved that a knowledge of this, even in small degree, will uplift the physical and moral standard of mortals, will increase longevity, will purify and elevate character. Thus progress will finally destroy all error, and bring immortality to light.
“A Psalm of Peace – for Everyone”
Christian Science Monitor Editorial April, 2003
…It’s compelling to realize that God’s constant, comforting, mothering love is also a fortress. Strong and unassailable. But also gentle, tender, healing. And this holy love leaves no one out. It knows no sides. It gathers everyone, wiping away animosities and hatred and terror. It’s the hope of the nations – the force that must eventually unite us all. It has the power not only to preserve us in conflict, but in a practical way, to help us find a resolution to conflict. A way to assuage terror. A way to peace. Mary Baker Eddy especially loved the 91st Psalm and based a beautiful poem on it – one that was later made into a hymn. This verse from it, to me, explains why humanity must inevitably come to consensus. And to peace.
Love is our refuge; only with mine eye
Can I behold the snare, the pit, the fall:
His habitation high is here, and nigh,
His arm encircles me, and mine, and all. (“Poems,” pg. 4)
Those arms of divine Love are around us all – you, me, everyone. Wherever we are, whatever our nation. And in those arms there are no enemies; there are only brothers and sisters.
