Hymns: 2, 226, 346
The Bible & Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy
1:3 God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
43:3 send out thy light and thy truth: let them lead me;
60:2 For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the Lord shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee.
32:24-26 Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day. And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him. And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh…
Day. The irradiance of Life; light, the spiritual idea of Truth and Love.
The mortal mind through which Truth appears most vividly is that one which has lost much materiality — much error — in order to become a better transparency for Truth. Then, like a cloud melting into thin vapor, it no longer hides the sun.
SH 589:4 (to.), 5
Jacob…Inspiration; the revelation of Science, in which the so-called material senses yield to the spiritual sense of Life and Love.
Jacob was alone, wrestling with error, — struggling with a mortal sense of life, substance, and intelligence as existent in matter with its false pleasures and pains, — when an angel, a message from Truth and Love, appeared to him and smote the sinew, or strength, of his error, till he saw its unreality; and Truth, being thereby understood, gave him spiritual strength in this Peniel of divine Science. Then said the spiritual evangel: “Let me go, for the day breaketh;” that is, the light of Truth and Love dawns upon thee.
9:1-2 The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.
61:1 … he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;
1:5…God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
4:6 For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
1:17 the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
9:1-7 … as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth. And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him. I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world. When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay, And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing.
Jesus. The highest human corporeal concept of the divine idea, rebuking and destroying error and bringing to light man’s immortality.
Jesus beheld in Science the perfect man, who appeared to him where sinning mortal man appears to mortals. In this perfect man the Saviour saw God’s own likeness, and this correct view of man healed the sick.
Christianity as Jesus taught it was not a creed, nor a system of ceremonies, nor a special gift from a ritualistic Jehovah; but it was the demonstration of divine Love casting out error and healing the sick, not merely in the name of Christ, or Truth, but in demonstration of Truth, as must be the case in the cycles of divine light.
… there is no place where God’s light is not seen, since Truth, Life, and Love fill immensity and are ever-present.
… if sickness and sin are illusions, the awakening from this mortal dream, or illusion, will bring us into health, holiness, and immortality. This awakening is the forever coming of Christ, the advanced appearing of Truth, which casts out error and heals the sick. …It would be contrary to our highest ideas of God to suppose Him capable of first arranging law and causation so as to bring about certain evil results, and then punishing the helpless victims of His volition for doing what they could not avoid doing.
8:3-12 the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst, They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou?… Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not. So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground. And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee? She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more… I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
7:1-3 Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?
5:14, 17 Ye are the light of the world…Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
10:10 I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
18:37 …To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.
Jesus was the highest human concept of the perfect man.
Uncover error, and it turns the lie upon you. Until the fact concerning error — namely, its nothingness — appears, the moral demand will not be met, and the ability to make nothing of error will be wanting.
… Let Truth uncover and destroy error in God’s own way, and let human justice pattern the divine.
9:1,3-5,7-9 … Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, … came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven: And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks…And the men which journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice, but seeing no man. And Saul arose from the earth; and when his eyes were opened, he saw no man…And he was three days without sight, …
“Let there be light,” is the perpetual demand of Truth and Love, changing chaos into order and discord into the music of the spheres.
Light is a symbol of Mind, of Life, Truth, and Love, and not a vitalizing property of matter. Science reveals only one Mind, and this one shining by its own light and governing the universe, including man, in perfect harmony.
The eternal Truth destroys what mortals seem to have learned from error, and man’s real existence as a child of God comes to light. Truth demonstrated is eternal life.
When first spoken in any age, Truth, like the light, “shineth in darkness, and the darkness comprehended it not.” A false sense of life, substance, and mind hides the divine possibilities, and conceals scientific demonstration.
The incarnation of Truth, that amplification of wonder and glory which angels could only whisper and which God illustrated by light and harmony, is consonant with ever-present Love.
Paul was not at first a disciple of Jesus but a persecutor of Jesus’ followers. When the truth first appeared to him in Science, Paul was made blind, and his blindness was felt; but spiritual light soon enabled him to follow the example and teachings of Jesus, healing the sick and preaching Christianity throughout Asia Minor, Greece, and even in imperial Rome.
20:19-22,26-29,31…the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. And when he had so said, he shewed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord. Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you. And…he breathed on them, and saith…Receive ye the Holy Ghost…after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you. Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing…Thomas answered…My Lord and my God. Jesus saith…Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed… these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.
12:44-46…He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me. And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me. I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.
The magnitude of Jesus’ work, his material disappearance before their eyes and his reappearance, all enabled the disciples to understand what Jesus had said. Heretofore they had only believed; now they understood.
18:28 thou wilt light my candle: the Lord my God will enlighten my darkness.
11:33 No man, when he hath lighted a candle, putteth it in a secret place, neither under a bushel, but on a candlestick, that they which come in may see the light;
22:5 And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.
In Thy light shall we see light.
As light destroys darkness and in the place of darkness all is light, so (in absolute Science) Soul, or God, is the only truth-giver to man.
Christian Science, rightly understood, leads to eternal harmony. It brings to light the only living and true God and man as made in His likeness;
Truth and Love enlighten the understanding, in whose “light shall we see light;” and this illumination is reflected spiritually by all who walk in the light and turn away from a false material sense.
This understanding is not intellectual, is not the result of scholarly attainments; it is the reality of all things brought to light.
As a material, theoretical life-basis is found to be a misapprehension of existence, the spiritual and divine Principle of man dawns upon human thought, and leads it to “where the young child was,” — even to the birth of a new-old idea, to the spiritual sense of being and of what Life includes. Thus the whole earth will be transformed by Truth on its pinions of light, chasing away the darkness of error.
“Face the light”
By Thomas C. Keller
The Christian Science Sentinel, October 1978
When we face the light, our shadows fall behind us. As we face the light of spiritual understanding, letting it illumine our thought, the dark images of fear and disease recede and disappear…Christ Jesus… turned the light of Truth on everything he did, dispelling the limitations of matter… In an effort to turn away from the shadows, one might start by asking, Does God know anything about this? How would Christ Jesus deal with it? Is this fable or fact? Am I seeing this correctly, or am I being tricked into believing in what doesn’t really exist? …If something isn’t Godlike, then it isn’t of God and therefore has no reality or substance to alarm. Since God, Truth, is all-knowing and knows only good, there’s nothing unknown in His presence. Since God is all-embracing Love, what is there to be feared? Since “God is light, and in him is no darkness at all,” no darkened corners can exist, nor can we ever be outside His light or possibly be lost from His view…Christian Science is today’s light of the Christ. It shows the way out of ignorance and materialism…The light of Truth and Love, perceived through prayer, shows us what actually is and thus exposes the unreality of what isn’t. That’s healing. Truth and Love do the work, and we evidence it…Our willingness to look to the light of Truth for the perfect likeness already present leads us to “the light of life” that Jesus referred to. The more clear and spiritual our view, the brighter grows the light. Thus we progressively find ourselves standing in the noonday of spiritual understanding with no shadows around us.
