THE BIBLE

SCIENCE & HEALTH WITH KEY TO THE SCRIPTURES
By Mary Baker Eddy
PSALMS
100:1 Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands.
2 Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing.
3 Know ye that the Lord he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
4 …be thankful unto him, and bless his name.
5 For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.
I CHRONICLES
16:23 Sing unto the Lord, all the earth;
25 For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised:
27 Glory and honour are in his presence; strength and gladness are in his place.
29 … worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.
34 O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever.
MARK
12:28 … one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all?
29 And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord:
30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.
31 And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
32 And the scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but he:
33 And to love him with all the heart and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbour as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.
34 And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God.
SH 4:3
What we most need is the prayer of fervent desire for growth in grace, expressed in patience, meekness, love, and good deeds. To keep the commandments of our Master and follow his example, is our proper debt to him and the only worthy evidence of our gratitude for all that he has done. Outward worship is not of itself sufficient to express loyal and heartfelt gratitude, since he has said: “If ye love me, keep my commandments.”
SH 451:8-16
Students of Christian Science, who start with its letter and think to succeed without the spirit, will either make shipwreck of their faith or be turned sadly awry. They must not only seek, but strive, to enter the narrow path of Life, for “wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat.” Man walks in the direction towards which he looks, and where his treasure is, there will his heart be also.
SH 4:17-22
Simply asking that we may love God will never make us love Him; but the longing to be better and holier, expressed in daily watchfulness and in striving to assimilate more of the divine character, will mould and fashion us anew, until we awake in His likeness.
SH 3:22-24
Are we really grateful for the good already received? Then we shall avail ourselves of the blessings we have, and thus be fitted to receive more.
SH 3:30-32 the
… the only acceptable prayer is to put the finger on the lips and remember our blessings.
PSALMS
107:8 Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!
9 … they cried unto the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them out of their distresses.
14 He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and brake their bands in sunder.
20 He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.
JOHN
11:1 Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.
4 When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.
17 … when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already.
41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.
42 And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.
43 And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.
44 And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.
LUKE
17:12 And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off:
13 And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.
14 And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed.
15 And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God,
16 And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan.
17 And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine?
18 There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger.
19 And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.
10:1 After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come.
17 ¶ And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name.
SH 329:7-12 (to 1st .)
Because you cannot walk on the water and raise the dead, you have no right to question the great might of divine Science in these directions. Be thankful that Jesus, who was the true demonstrator of Science, did these things, and left his example for us.
SH 94:17
Of the ten lepers whom Jesus healed, but one returned to give God thanks, — that is, to acknowledge the divine Principle which had healed him.
SH 3:22
Gratitude is much more than a verbal expression of thanks. Action expresses more gratitude than speech.
SH 16:2-5
The highest prayer is not one of faith merely; it is demonstration. Such prayer heals sickness, and must destroy sin and death.
PSALMS
104:33 I will sing unto the Lord as long as I live: I will sing praise to my God while I have my being.
3 Know ye that the Lord he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
4 Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.
5 For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all
JOHN
14:12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.
13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
14 If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.
15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.
16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.
SH 26:1
While we adore Jesus, and the heart overflows with gratitude for what he did for mortals,–treading alone his loving pathway up to the throne of glory, in speechless agony exploring the way for us,–yet Jesus spares us not one individual experience, if we follow his commands faithfully; and all have the cup of sorrowful effort to drink in proportion to their demonstration of his love, till all are redeemed through divine Love.
SH 55:15-29
Truth’s immortal idea is sweeping down the centuries, gathering beneath its wings the sick and sinning. My weary hope tries to realize that happy day, when man shall recognize the Science of Christ and love his neighbor as himself,–when he shall realize God’s omnipotence and the healing power of the divine Love in what it has done and is doing for mankind. The promises will be fulfilled. The time for the reappearing of the divine healing is throughout all time; and whosoever layeth his earthly all on the altar of divine Science, drinketh of Christ’s cup now, and is endued with the spirit and power of Christian healing.
In the words of St. John: “He shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever.” This Comforter I understand to be Divine Science.
EPHESIANS
5:1 Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children;
2 And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us,
8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:
10 Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.
20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;
COLOSSIANS
3:15 … let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.
SH 485:14-17
Emerge gently from matter into Spirit. Think not to thwart the spiritual ultimate of all things, but come naturally into Spirit through better health and morals and as the result of spiritual growth.
SH 249:6-9
Let us feel the divine energy of Spirit, bringing us into newness of life and recognizing no mortal nor material power as able to destroy. Let us rejoice that we are subject to the divine “powers that be.”
SH 497:3-8
As adherents of Truth, we take the inspired Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal Life.
We acknowledge and adore one supreme and infinite God. We acknowledge His Son, one Christ; the Holy Ghost or divine Comforter; and man in God’s image and likeness.
SH 497:24
And we solemnly promise to watch, and pray for that Mind to be in us which was also in Christ Jesus; to do unto others as we would have them do unto us; and
to be merciful, just, and pure.
SH 570:14-18, 23-24
Millions of unprejudiced minds–simple seekers for Truth, weary wanderers, athirst in the desert–are waiting and watching for rest and drink. Give them a cup of cold water in Christ’s name, and never fear the consequences.
Those ready for the blessing you impart will give thanks.
Periodicals Quotation:
“Gratitude Brings Harvest”
By Milton Simon
Christian Science Sentinel
November 22, 1958
“The law of God is a law of the certain, continuous unfoldment of good. To be discouraged at a time of trial indicates that one has more to learn about the unchanging nature of divine Principle. Gratefully to acknowledge God, good, in the midst of a trying experience is to rob error of its claim to victory.
“Gratitude for and expectancy of good usually accompany prayer. But to thank God for His goodness and retain in thought the expectation of evil is inconsistent. Having prayed, do we still fear that sickness will persist and problems remain unsolved? It is more scientific to expect good to rule evil out of thought and complete the demonstration.
“Oh, the joy of being continuously thankful! We lift our thoughts in praise to God, but not only for benefits received. We honor our Maker because we have come, in a measure, to understand Him as unchanging Truth and boundless, ever-present Love. This gratitude does more than rejoice in the solution of a problem. It aids in maintaining the consciousness of His presence, before which all problems must yield.”
