THE BIBLE

PSALMS

53:2 God looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, that did seek God.

5 There were they in great fear, where no fear was:

78:22 Because they believed not in God, and trusted not in his salvation:

HEBREWS

11:6 … without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

MARK

11:22  And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God.

23  For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.

24  … What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.

MATTHEW

8:5 … when Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him,

6  And saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented.

7  And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him.

8  The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed.

9  For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.

10  When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.

13  And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour.

9:27 And when Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying, and saying, Thou Son of David, have mercy on us.

28  And when he was come into the house, the blind men came to him: and Jesus saith unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said unto him, Yea, Lord.

29  Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you.

And their eyes were opened;

17:14  And when they were come to the multitude, there came to him a certain man, kneeling down to him, and saying,

15  Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatic, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water.

16  And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him.

18  And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour.

19  Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out?

20   And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

JOHN

11:1 Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.

4  When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.

32  Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

40  Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?

41  Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.

42  And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.

43  And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.

44 And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.

14:12  Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.

8:32  … know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

MARK

15:15 …Pilate, willing to content the people, released Barabbas unto them, and delivered Jesus, when he had scourged him, to be crucified.

16:14  Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen.

JOHN

20:27  Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.

29  … Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.

MARK

16:15  And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

17  And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

18  They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

20   And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following.

JOHN

20:30 … many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book:

31  But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

PROVERBS

3:5  Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

6  In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

I THESSALONIANS

2:13 For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.

II THESSALONIANS

2:13 …God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:

15  Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.

16  Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace,

17  Comfort your hearts, and stablish you in every good word and work.

SCIENCE & HEALTH WITH KEY TO THE SCRIPTURES

BY MARY BAKER EDDY

SH 582:1-2

BELIEVING. Firmness and constancy; not a faltering nor a blind faith, but the perception of spiritual Truth.

SH 488:7

The Hebrew and Greek words often translated belief differ somewhat in meaning from that conveyed by the English verb believe; they have more the significance of faith, understanding, trust, constancy, firmness. Hence the Scriptures often appear in our common version to approve and endorse belief, when they mean to enforce the necessity of understanding.

SH 339:25-28

The basis of all health, sinlessness, and immortality is the great fact that God is
the only Mind; and this Mind must be not merely believed, but it must be understood.

SH 71:1

Nothing is real and eternal, — nothing is Spirit, — but God and His idea. Evil has no reality. It is neither person, place, nor thing, but is simply a belief, an illusion
of material sense.

SH 75:12

Jesus said of Lazarus: “Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.” Jesus restored Lazarus by the understanding that Lazarus had never died, not by an admission that his body had died and then lived again. Had
Jesus believed that Lazarus had lived or died in his body, the Master would have stood on the same plane of belief as those who buried the body, and he could not have resuscitated it.

SH 312:17-20

Mortals try to believe without understanding Truth; yet God is Truth. Mortals claim that death is inevitable; but man’s eternal Principle is ever-present Life.

SH 427:7-9

If man believes in death now, he must disbelieve in it when learning that there is no reality in death, since the truth of being is deathless.

SH 218:17-26

Why pray for the recovery of the sick, if you are without faith in God’s willingness and ability to heal them? If you do believe in God, why do you substitute drugs for the Almighty’s power, and employ means which lead only into material ways of obtaining help, instead of turning in time of need to God, divine Love, who is an ever-present help?

Treat a belief in sickness as you would sin, with sudden dismissal. Resist the temptation to believe in matter as intelligent, as having sensation or power.

SH 83:9

Nothing is more antagonistic to Christian Science than a blind belief without understanding, for such a belief hides Truth and builds on error.

SH 317:20-29, 31

Our Lord and Master presented himself to his disciples after his resurrection from the grave, as the self-same Jesus whom they had loved before the tragedy on Calvary. To the materialistic Thomas, looking for the ideal Saviour in matter instead of in Spirit and to the testimony of the material senses and the body,
more than to Soul, for an earnest of immortality, — to him Jesus furnished the proof that he was unchanged by the crucifixion.

Nothing but a display of matter could make existence real to Thomas. For him to believe in matter was no task, but for him to conceive of the substantiality of Spirit — to know that nothing can efface Mind and immortality, in which Spirit reigns — was more difficult.

SH 38:10-14

Jesus said: “These signs shall follow them that believe; . . . they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.” Who believes him? He was addressing
his disciples, yet he did not say, “These signs shall follow you,” but them — “them that believe” in all time to come.

SH 110:25

Jesus demonstrated the power of Christian Science to heal mortal minds and bodies. But this power was lost sight of, and must again be spiritually discerned, taught, and demonstrated according to Christ’s command, with “signs following.” Its Science must be apprehended by as many as believe on Christ and spiritually understand Truth.

SH 69:13

Spiritually to understand that there is but one creator, God, unfolds all creation, confirms the Scriptures, brings the sweet assurance of no parting, no pain,
and of man deathless and perfect and eternal.

“Believing”

By Robert MacKusick

The Christian Science Journal

February 2009

Everyone believes in something. It can be as basic as believing in one’s own human existence, identity, and purpose. It can be as uncomplicated as the optimistic view that everything will eventually turn out in a good way. But sometimes believing is the pessimistic view that everything will eventually self-destruct without hope of redemption.

However, as soon as you open the door to the Bible you can feel exuding from within it a welcome to a much higher, uplifting concept of believing. The Bible takes you to a level above the human mind—to an inspired, spiritual level. The Bible invites the reader to believe, not in self or mere optimism or the inevitability of evil, but in God, the divine source of all that is real and good.

The Bible not only invites us as spiritual seekers to believe, it demands that we do. And to have faith. But not through ignorance or blind faith.

God is not out there someplace in the cosmos, a Supreme Being we can only hope or blindly believe exists. He is divine, infinite Principle. Present here. Right now. In this place. Believing in God with “firmness and constancy,” based on an ever-increasing understanding of Him—a “perception of spiritual Truth”—brings us to that level where we feel and experience the presence of divine Truth in our everyday lives.
